Vascular Surgery Specialist Joins Growing Division

Dr. Shang Loh’s Expertise also Helps Broaden the Division’s General Vascular Surgery

STONY BROOK, N.Y
., August 31, 2011 – Shang Loh, M.D., has joined Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s

Department of Surgery as Assistant Professor, Division of Vascular Surgery, announced Todd K. Rosengart, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Loh will focus his clinical practice on the management of aortic aneurysms, endovascular treatment of aortic dissections, the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and the treatment of extracranial carotid atherosclerosis.

Dr. Loh comes to Stony Brook from NYU Langone Medical Center, where he completed a two-year Fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He has trained in the latest conventional and minimally invasive endovascular techniques to treat aortic aneurysms, other aortic abnormalities, as well as vascular conditions. Specifically, he has extensive experience in aortic stent grafting for the endovascular repair of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections. In addition, he is experienced in advanced endovascular techniques, such as graft fenestration, hybrid operations, snorkel techniques for the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms, and bifurcated graft replacement for the treatment of iliac artery aneurysms to preserve blood flow to the pelvis.

“Because of his varied surgical skills, Dr. Loh will contribute significantly to our practice and help to expand our programs in Advanced Aortic Surgery and General Vascular Surgery to meet our patient population needs,” says Dr. Rosengart.

Dr. Loh joins a growing Division within the Department of Surgery that is comprised of five board-certified vascular surgeons, a Ph.D. vascular physiologist, a non-invasive vascular technology specialist, two board-certified podiatric surgeons and a comprehensive clinical and administrative support staff. The Division of Vascular Surgery at Stony Brook provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of every aspect of arterial and venous pathology. The Division offers inpatient and outpatient services and performs an excess of 2,000 open and endovascular interventions annually, and oversees the Vascular Laboratory which performs more than 10,000 non-invasive diagnostic vascular studies each year. Vascular surgeons in the Division work collaboratively with the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiovascular Medicine for providing best patient care and achieving optimal outcomes.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Loh’s research interests include emerging endovascular technologies for the treatment of complex, pararenal, and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, endovascular treatment of acute and chronic aortic dissections, and the role of progenitor cells in the generation of new blood vessels in ischemic tissues.

Dr. Loh will also be involved in the education and training of Vascular Surgery and General Surgery residents, as well as Vascular Surgery fellows. This includes training within the Department’s Surgical Skills Center.

Dr. Loh received his MD with honors from Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2002. During his undergraduate medical training, he spent a year at Stanford University as the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow. He also held a two-year position through Stanford as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow supported by the American Heart Association.

His Residency training at NYU began in General Surgery, where he rose to be Senior and Chief Resident from 2007 to 2009, shortly before his Fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

Board certified in General Surgery, Dr. Loh is a member of the American Medical Association, the New York Medical Association, and the American College of Surgeons. He is a candidate member of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and the Society for Vascular Surgery.
