ter, was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery, effective immediately, announced Dr. Richard N. Fine, Dean of the School of Medicine. He had been interim Chair of the department since August 2008.
With 40 faculty members and nearly 50 physicians in training including residents and fellows, the Department of Surgery comprises the Divisions of Breast Surgery; Cardiothoracic Surgery; Colon and Rectal Surgery; General Surgery, Trauma, Burns and Critical Care; Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ENT); Pediatric Surgery; Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Upper Gastrointestinal and General Oncologic Surgery; and, Vascular Surgery.
“Dr. Rosengart is a Tenured Professor who is a highly skilled technical surgeon, a program leader, a scientist and a clinician who has published extensively and is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students,” said Dr. Fine. “He has proven himself as an effective leader and is the ideal person to fill the role of Chairman of his department.”
The Department of Surgery at Stony Brook is an active participant in several national quality initiatives, including the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, a national surgical quality improvement program of the American College of Surgeons, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s nationwide Sprint for the Surgical Safety Checklist developed by a team of clinical experts at the World Health Organization.
A nationally recognized leader in cardiac surgery, Dr. Rosengart joined Stony Brook University in January 2006 from Northwestern University’s School of Medicine in Chicago, where he was professor of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at its affiliated hospitals of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. Recipient of numerous honors and awards for excellence as both a clinician and scientist, Dr. Rosengart is an NIH-funded cardiothoracic surgeon with multiple active research interests in cardiac surgery. He will also continue to serve as co-director of the Stony Brook University Heart Center.
As one of his first official actions as Department Chair, Dr. Rosengart announced that the Department of Surgery would offer community physicians a series of free Continuing Medical Education seminars called “CME Saturday.” Surgical Saturdays” begins on October 10 and is held the second Sunday of the month through June. He is also responsible for the recruitment and installation of seven new faculty members in the department with specialties in breast, colorectal, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, plastic, trauma/critical care/general, ENT and vascular surgery.

Dr. Rosengart has been selected for inclusion in the Castle Connolly Guide, America’s Top Doctors; featured in the Castle Connolly Guide, Top Doctors: New York Metro Area (previously featured in the Castle Connolly Guide, Best Doctors in Chicago); selected for inclusion in the Consumers’ Research Council of America Guide to America’s Top Surgeons; listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America; and listed in the Millennium Edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Dr. Rosengart received his medical doctorate from Northwestern University in 1983 and was in the prestigious Medical Honors Program there. He completed his residency training
at New York University (NYU Medical Center; 1989), and his fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at New York Hospital (1991). Before joining the faculty at Northwestern University in 1999, Dr. Rosengart was an associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and associate attending cardiothoracic surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he performed one of the world’s first open-heart gene therapy procedures.
He served as a medical staff fellow from 1985 to 1987 in the Surgery Branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and as an honorary senior registrar in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, England. Dr. Rosengart is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association of Thoracic Surgery.
He has served on the Executive Leadership Committee for the American Heart Association (AHA) Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia Council, he is a board member of the American Heart Association Long Island Chapter, and chair of the AHA’s Region I Bioengineering and Biotechnology Study Group for research grant selections. He was a founding member of the national 21st Century Cardiac Surgical Society, has authored over 100 publications, and serves on both NIH and American Heart Association study sections.
Dr. Rosengart serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and has been a manuscript reviewer for journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He has been a contributing editor to Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and CT Digest, among other scholarly medical publications.
