Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine faculty and students provided dental screenings and oral health education during this summer’s “Stand Up for the Homeless”event.

Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University provided free dental screenings and oral health education to more than 200 adults and children from area homeless shelters at the “Stand Up for the Homeless” event on August 3, sponsored by the office of the Suffolk County Executive and held at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.

The annual event allows homeless individuals to gain access to free services and products offered by non-profit, government, educational, and other organizations on Long Island. The event provided another venue in which students and professionals from the School of Dental Medicine could provide dental preventive and treatment services to those in need. The school provides thousands of Long Islanders in need of dental care and oral health education by partaking in dozens of community events during the year and at Stony Brook’s Dental Care Center.

“Our faculty and students provided a vital healthcare benefit for those in urgent need of oral health services in our community,” says Ray C. Williams, D.M.D., Dean, School of Dental Medicine. “The experience will help provide a bridge to their understanding the importance of oral health in relation to their complete health, and their children’s health.”

The group from the School of Dental Medicine also provided oral hygiene supplies to all adults and children at the event. They also provided information and explanations to adults on how to obtain dental services and dental insurance within their means.
