SBU School of Medicine Vice Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education Appointed to National Board of Medical Examiners
Dr. Latha Chandran to Serve as NBME Test Committee Representative
Latha Chandran, M.D., M.P.H., Vice Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and Professor of Pediatrics at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, was appointed a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners as a Test Committee Representative.
The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for physicians and other health professionals. The NBME develops the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which provides a common evaluation system for applicants seeking initial licensure to practice medicine in the United States.
Nadeen Belbin, the Governance Coordinator for NBME, says that Test Committee Representatives are appointed annually by the NBME President, with the consent of the Executive Board, and may be renewed for additional periods, not to exceed nine consecutive years. There are some 40 representatives nationally from medical institutions each year.
“I have worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners and understand their test development process well. I am pleased to represent the test committee on the board and am hoping that I will be able to use the expertise I gain to enhance the quality of our medical student teaching and assessment at Stony Brook.”
Dr. Chandran has more than 20 years of faculty leadership experience. During her career at SBUMC, she has led many successful education and training expansion initiatives for faculty, residents and medical students. Dr. Chandran has served on academic promotions and tenure committees and was instrumental in creating guidelines to facilitate promotion of clinician educators using an educator portfolio template at SBUMC. Dr. Chandran is also the first clinician educator to receive tenure in the Educator Scholar track at SBUMC.
She is board certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and has previously served as Division Chief of General Pediatrics and as Interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. She is the recipient of numerous awards, most notably in education and educational leadership. Dr. Chandran has published numerous research articles in peer review journals. Her research areas of expertise include faculty development, educator portfolios and educational scholarship. This past year she was one of only 44 Stony Brook physicians to receive the 2009-2010 Stony Brook Best Doctors Award.
Dr. Chandran resides in Nesconset with her husband, Prem Chandran, and her two sons, Anand and Ashok.
