NEW DOCTORS ON CALL – SBU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GRADUATES 113 AT ANNUAL CONVOCATION
Most Begin Residencies at Institutions Around the Nation in July
STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 28, 2010 – At Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s 36th Convocation, 113 graduates shed their student status to receive M.D. degrees. The 2010 Class featured a collection of diverse individuals from various academic and work backgrounds, with many choosing medicine as a second career. Approximately 1,000 of the students’ family members and friends attended the May 18 ceremony at the Staller Center on SBU’s West Campus.
Before beginning their four-year journey at SBU School of Medicine, the students hailed from areas all over the United States and world – Northeast, Midwest and West Coast states to countries in Africa and Asia. In July, most will begin a new journey as to start their residencies at a variety of top medical institutions around the country.
Two-thirds of the students will practice in the New York metropolitan area and on Long Island at institutions such as New York University School of Medicine, Columbia University Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, and St. Lukes-Roosevelt. Thirteen students will stay at Stony Brook University Medical Center for their residency training. Some will train at large institutions outside New York, such as UC Davis Medical Center in California, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Massachusetts.
At the Convocation, Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, M.D., President, Stony Brook University, delivered the Keynote Address. He congratulated the students on their accomplishment and encouraged them by saying there is “no better job than being a doctor.” He also expressed his excitement for their journey into medicine by reflecting on his own medical career that began 30 years ago, emphasizing that the students now enter a field that is changing rapidly with new discoveries and treatments for diseases like never before.
Elwyn L. Simons, a distinguished paleontologist, conservationist and explorer, received an Honorary Doctorate during the ceremony. Dr. Simons has made exceptional contributions to primate evolution to advance the field of paleoanthropology over the past half century.
Established in 1971, the Stony Brook University School of Medicine graduates 100 or more fourth year medical students each year. Total school enrollment is more than 400. The mission of the School is to educate caring and skilled physicians well-prepared to enter graduate and specialty training programs.
