LOCAL CUB SCOUT PACK GIVES TOYS TO HOSPITALIZED CHLDREN AT SBUMC

Dozens of games, dolls and other gifts donated to SBUMC Child Life Program

STONY BROOK, N.Y
., May 20, 2010 – Cub Scout Pack 294 of Farmingville, N.Y., wanted to do something special for hospitalized children being cared for at Stony Brook University Medical Center. They decided to donate dozens of toys, including popular games such as Candyland and Battleship, to the children. Some of the pack members and den leaders came to SBUMC on May 13 to deliver the toys to the Child Life Program.

The toys originated from the U.S. Marine-sponsored “Toys for Tots” national program. The local Lions Club works with Pack 294 to distribute Toys for Tots gifts. This year there was an excess of toys after the holiday season, and the boys from the pack wanted to deliver these as a gift to local children in the hospital.

According to Den Leader Fran Colello-Walsh, the pack includes 40 Cubs, and the delivery of toys is part of their efforts this year to help other children in need and learn more about community service. Through the Child Life Program, pediatric patients at SBUMC will be able to enjoy the games and other toys in the hospital playroom and in their rooms while hospitalized.

Through the Child Life Program at SBUMC, professionals provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. Activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.
