SBUMC Stroke Program Runs Prevention Lecture and Support Program During National Stroke Awareness Month
SBUMC to Participate in Area 5K Run and Benefit on May 23
STONY BROOK, N.Y
., May 6, 2010 – The Stroke Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center will hold and participate in a series of community events in May to commemorate National Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States with more than 160,000 deaths annually, and it the leading cause of adult disability.
Individuals may learn more about how to reduce their risk for stroke at a community lecture by Dr. Ann Marie Byers, DNP, SBUMC Stroke Program Nurse Practitioner, on Stroke Prevention. The lecture will be held at Patchogue-Medford Library on May 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
On May 23, members of the Stroke Program will participate in the Third Annual Judy’s Run for Stroke Awareness. The 5K run and 1 mile Fun Walk takes place at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, N.Y. SBUMC is one of the sponsors, and free blood pressure screenings will be provided by the SBUMC staff at the event. For more information about the run, visit

On May 25, the Stroke Support Group Meeting will include a speaker. Suzette Smookler, M.S., R.D., Administrator of Clinical and Nutrition & Education Services at SBUMC, will discuss the importance of diet and nutrition for stroke prevention.
Each month the Stroke Support Group Meeting educates attendees on the risk factors, prevention, as well as signs and symptoms of stroke and survivorship issues. The meetings are open to all stroke survivors, family members and care givers and are also a forum for stroke survivors who interact and share their challenges and triumphs.
