Surgery are teaming up during Melanoma Awareness Month to provide free skin cancer screenings and an update on melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. The event will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the Stony Brook University Cancer Center lobby.
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. Melanoma alone will account for nearly 70,000 skin cancer cases this year. Of the nearly 12,000 annual deaths due to skin cancer, most are due to melanoma.
Colette Pameijer, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery and Team Leader, Melanoma Management Team, will speak about preventing, detecting and treating skin cancer, particularly melanoma and the latest in treating this form of skin cancer.
Stony Brook dermatologists will screen individuals 18 years of age and older for skin cancer throughout the morning. Those who do not have insurance, are underinsured or have never had a skin cancer screening are encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is required for the screening.
Light refreshments will be provided, and educational materials on skin cancer and prevention will be available.
For more information, or to pre-register for a screening, call HealthConnect® at 631-444-4000.
