Learn About New Minimally Invasive Approaches To Treat GI Cancers, Plastic Surgery Techniques, at SBUMC Seminars
STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 4, 2010 – Faculty from Stony Brook University Medical Center’s Department of Surgery continue to run an innovative and free program offering community physicians and surgeons continuing medical education (CME) opportunities. Highlighting the schedule this spring is the May 8 seminar titled “Upper Gastrointestinal & General Oncologic Surgery.” Kevin Watkins, M.D., Chief of the Division of Upper Gastrointestinal & General Oncologic Surgery at SBUMC, will discuss minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques to treat GI cancers.
Dr. Watkins will detail his approach during a presentation titled “Laparoscopic Management of Cystic Pancreatic Lesions.” He will also touch upon a new procedure for treating pancreatic and liver tumors using electrical fields to poke holes in tumors. Joining Dr. Watkins at the seminar are other physicians at SBUMC who specialize in evaluating GI disease and treating GI cancers. They include Jonathan Buscaglia, M.D., a gastroenterologist, who will discuss “Endoscopic Evaluations of Cystic Lesions of the Pancreas,” and Philip Bao, M.D., who will detail “Indications for and Surgical Management of Cystic Pancreatic Lesions.”
On June 12, the seminar topic is Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Several surgeons specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery will discuss the latest and most effective methods for various types of reconstructive surgery. Duc Bui, M.D., will lecture on “Asthetic & Reconstructive Breast Surgery: State-of-the-Art.” Sami Khan, M.D., will discuss “Cosmetic Surgery: What’s New, What’s Old, What Works.” Two other presenters will tackle topics related to reconstruction of specific body parts. Mark Gelfand, M.D., will present “Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Simplified,” and Jason Ganz, M.D., will discuss “Common Surgical Conditions of the Hand.”
Both the May and June Saturday Surgical Seminars will take place in the Stony Brook University Hospital Lobby Conference Rooms (1 and 2). The programs run from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. For more information, call 631-444-2037.
