Devin Stinsman Brings Video Game System to Burn Center on His Birthday

STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 11, 2011 – Nearly two months after a horrific space heater accident severely burned the right leg of Devin Stinsman, he and his family returned to the Stony Brook University Medical Center Burn Center with a gift. In gratitude for the treatment Devin received as an inpatient at the Burn Center, the Port Jefferson Station family donated an Xbox 360 video game console as a means of diversion and entertainment for inpatients. Devin presented the Xbox to the Burn Center on his own 10th birthday on March 7.

The Xbox 360 is a welcome addition to a portable plasma TV and video game console donated last month to the Burn Center by the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund. Patients will now be able to enjoy and engage in numerous gaming activities as part of their recovery and rehabilitation. These include Nintendo Wii games and a Wii Fit board, and various games with most up-to-date Xbox console, including Toy Story and Fight Night.

“We now have a variety of gaming systems that will provide a tremendous diversion for burn patients and be helpful for rehabilitation,” says Steven Sandoval, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medical Director of the Burn Center.

“We wanted to express to Dr. Sandoval and the staff how grateful we are for their care of Devin and to give back in some way to help the patients,” says Dee Stinsman, Devin’s mother. “Devin knows about the long hours of recovery, and he thinks other kids will really enjoy playing these video games during that critical time when they are in the hospital.”

As the only designated burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County, the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center coordinates burn services throughout the county and provides a resource for training and research in burn care. The Burn Center also serves as a resource to neighboring community-based hospitals.
