Stony Brook University Hospital Auxiliary Uses Funds To Purchase New Intensive Care Imaging Technology

AUXILIARY USES FUNDS FOR HIGH TECH ICU MONITOR

Funds raised by the Stony Brook University Hospital Auxiliary were used to purchase a new non-invasive blood-flow monitoring device called Cardio Q for the Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).

The CardioQ hemodynamic monitor uses disposable ultra-sound probes inserted into the throat to determine the amount of blood being pumped around the body aiding physicians in evaluating performance of the heart. Also referred to as esophageal Doppler monitoring, the Cardio Q accurately monitors blood-flow in the sickest patients. It allows the clinical team to better manage the patient and as such, helps reduce complications.

To date, the Stony Brook University Hospital Auxiliary has raised almost $6 million, which has been used to support many employee activities, purchase state-of-the-art hospital equipment and enhance patient care. Some of the Auxiliary’s contributions include a birthing room, a mammographic ultrasound machine, ultrasound equipment for high-risk obstetrical cases, and life support ambulances.

The Auxiliary derives its funding from the Auxiliary Gift Shop, in-house vendor sales and annual fundraising events such as the “25 Years of Caring” event. Membership benefits include an invitation to the annual luncheon, advance notice of all special events, quarterly newsletters and an annual report.
