Public Health Education (CPHE), a Health Sciences program through the School of Health Technology and Management at Stony Brook University. The gift will be used for educational materials needed for the CPHE’s mission of providing timely information on HIV/AIDS to support health and human service professionals.

Each month the Honor Society students contribute to or donate their time and talents to various causes in the community. In future months, they hope to build upon their December 2010 donation to the CPHE in recognition of national AIDS Awareness month.

“The thoughtful gift from these students will certainly help our program to educate and train hundreds of professionals in our region who care for HIV/AIDS patients,” says Ilvan Arroyo, Associate Director of the CPHE. “Understanding new health concerns and changes regarding treatment and care of these patients are essential for practitioners, and training provides the means necessary for them to stay up-to-date.”

Arroyo says that while the CPHE’s HIV/AIDS education and training is ongoing, the Center will hold a special training for physicians who practice at the Suffolk County Department of Health’s Health Centers this coming spring. The training will be held within Stony Brook’s Health Science Center on May 11. Topics of training include HIV and substance abuse, HIV and alcohol abuse, and mental illnesses related to HIV/AIDS.
