STONY BROOK, N.Y., June 14, 2012 –  Uta Dee of the Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) Auxiliary has been elected President of the Nassau-Suffolk Council of Hospital Auxiliaries. The Setauket, N.Y., resident will serve a one-year term through June 2013.

Dee joined the SBUH Auxiliary in 1984 and has twice served as President of the hospital auxiliary board. She has extensive experience in fund raising and advocating on behalf of Stony Brook University Hospital, a 597-bed academic medical center.

She has also served as President of the University Association, an organization that welcomes foreign faculty to the Stony Brook University campus and helps them transition to their new environment. A native of England, Dee came to the United States in 1976. While living in England, she taught French and German.

As President of the Nassau-Suffolk Council of Hospital Auxiliaries, Dee will lead an organization of hospital volunteers that is aligned with the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), the organization that represents Long Island’s not-for-profit and public hospitals. The purpose of the Nassau-Suffolk Council of Hospital Auxiliaries is to:
•    Provide a basis for exchange of experience on Auxiliary activities with emphasis on the Nassau/Suffolk area.
•    Develop ways and means of stimulating interests throughout the two counties in hospital auxiliaries and volunteer services.
•    Promote the extension of hospital auxiliary programs for the benefit of the individual hospitals.

“Advocacy is a key activity for Auxilians,” Dee said. “I want to encourage interaction between the various auxiliaries in Nassau and Suffolk counties so we can exchange ideas and information.”

“We are justifiably proud of Dee’s election to this significant leadership role for Hospital Auxilians across Long Island,” said Fred Sganga, Interim Chief Executive Director of Stony Brook University Hospital. “Her ascendancy to this role is further testament to Stony Brook’s rise in leadership as Long Island’s premier academic medical center.”

Hospital Auxilians play a vital role in the delivery of compassionate care at each of their facilities and are major fund raisers for their respective institutions, said Janine Logan, Director of Communications for NSHC.

“Collectively, Long Island’s volunteer Auxilians raise millions of dollars through gift shop and thrift shop sales, fashion shows and boutiques, and other events,” Logan said. “In addition, they are actively involved in advocating on federal, state, and local levels on behalf of their hospitals and the thousands of patients that these institutions serve each day.”

The SBUH Auxiliary is a volunteer organization made up of a diverse group of men and women committed to raising money for hospital projects for which other sources of money are not readily available. Since its formation in 1981, the Auxiliary has raised more than $6 million for hospital projects, services and equipment.

Membership in the Auxiliary includes an invitation to the annual luncheon, advance notice of all special events, periodic newsletters and an annual report. For more information about the Auxiliary, call (631) 444-2699 or visit www.stonybrookmedicine.edu/patientcare/auxiliary.
