
STONY BROOK, NY, January 25, 2023 – Stony Brook University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has announced a new graduate program in data science (DAS), which will begin in the Fall 2023 term and offer both MS and PhD degree tracks.
The program is designed to prepare the next generation of data scientists for careers that utilize big data systems analysis and machine learning. It integrates computer science and statistical science while boasting a diversified range of electives in quantitative finance, operations research and bioinformatics.
“The new data science graduate program combines the strengths of our nationally ranked Departments of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, while channeling the support of the tri-state and New York metropolitan business communities,” said Jon Longtin, interim dean, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “As a flagship institution of the State University of New York, Stony Brook offers one of the most affordable tuitions in the country, creating opportunities for more students to benefit from these outstanding programs.”
This interdepartmental degree program will provide vigorous training in data science, encompassing core topics like statistical analysis, machine learning, big data management and computer programming.
“In today’s data-driven world, the demand for skilled professionals in the field of data science has grown exponentially, creating the need for graduates who can provide the needed technical and analytical expertise,” said Samir Das, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, also home to Stony Brook’s Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation. “In our curriculum, students will be able to build multidisciplinary expertise in the cross-section of statistical analysis, big data analytics, and computing, making them very valuable in the job market.”
