STONY BROOK, NY – February 18, 2025 – The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University (HISB) will host a full-day “Regional Grant Application Writing Workshop” on Thursday, February 27, 2025, featuring  a speaker from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). Researchers in the arts, humanities, and social sciences will have the opportunity to launch new collaborative ideas, and learn how to write more successful grant and fellowship applications from the leaders of granting institutions.

The workshop will be led by Dr. John Paul Christy, ACLS senior director of U.S. Programs. It will consist of presentations on the grant process and, for those interested in participating, one-on-one consultations with Dr. Christy. The workshop provides an opportunity to promote scholarly work in, and engagement with, the arts, humanities and social sciences, and to enhance the potential for collaboration across our region and across disciplines.

“The exceptional work of humanities-based scholarship in all fields advances our understanding of complex lived histories, deepens our sense of shared cultural heritage, and helps us imagine a better future for civil society,” said Janet Ward, professor of philosophy and associate provost for Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Initiatives. “The American Council of Learned Societies provides recognition and support of research demonstrating these valuable humanistic principles via their highly prestigious grants. Stony Brook University’s grant-writing workshop in the humanities, led by Dr. Christy and hosted by our Humanities Institute, will provide an invaluable opportunity for faculty, staff, doctoral students, postdocs, independent scholars, and members of cultural organizations across our entire region to learn how to submit more competitive applications for the multiple grant options offered by the ACLS.”

There is also an opportunity for attendees to register for one-to-one consultations, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Also sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the workshop is free and open to the public.

“At the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook (HISB) our mission is to support and promote the work of our Humanities faculty, and to connect their work to research happening across the university in computer science, medicine, engineering, physics, atmospheric sciences, and so many other disciplines and departments,” said Michael Rubenstein, director of the HISB and associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of English. “One of our efforts is exemplified in the upcoming ACLS Regional Grant-Writing Workshop for scholars in the Humanities. Colleagues will learn about applying for the traditional individual fellowships that allow scholars to write their books and also, crucially, applying for the institutional grants that can establish SBU as a hub or a laboratory where innovative interdisciplinary work can take root and flourish.”

The Regional Grant Application Writing Workshop will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at the Stony Brook University Wang Center and is free and open to the public (with limited one-to-one consultations in the afternoon). Registration required, with separate RSVP for limited faculty one-to-one meetings.
