STONY BROOK, NY, March 9, 2012 – Singing, dancing, and even comedic performances of pediatric cancer survivors, their siblings and friends, will take center stage at the “Rising Stars” Talent Show and Art Exhibit. The event is free and takes place on March 12 in the Student Activities Center on Stony Brook University’s main campus. The opening acts starts at 2:00 p.m.

Rising Stars is sponsored by the Sunrise Fund of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The event has been supported by the patients’ caregivers, their families and the community since the first performance of 2003. The talent show provides a setting in which children being treated for cancer (or previously treated) can express themselves in the theater arts.

“These performances enhance the children’s sense of accomplishment, improve self-esteem, and help them to regain confidence, especially after the difficult period of cancer treatment,” says Rosemary A. Mahan, R.N., of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and Director, Rising Stars.

Featured performances include a group of younger children singing “Twist and Shout” and waving pom poms; a troupe of dancing “cats” on stage, and a bell choir chiming to songs such as “Take me out to the ballgame” and “Circle of life.”

Following the performance is a complimentary Rising Stars celebration and reception, along with an art exhibit, featuring patients and other children’s works.

The Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and the special needs of children with cancer. It was also created to raise funds to support cutting-edge research and sustain initiatives such as family support groups and a School Re-entry Program.
