Dr. Nancy Goroff Appointed Associate Provost for the Integration of Research, Education, and Professional Development and Associate Dean of the Graduate School

STONY BROOK, NY, September 13, 2013 – Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dennis N. Assanis, has announced that Dr. Nancy S. Goroff has been selected to serve as the Associate Provost for the Integration of Research, Education, and Professional Development, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, effective September 9, 2013.
Dr. Goroff is currently an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stony Brook University. During her tenure at Stony Brook, she has made significant contributions to graduate education, including leading with colleague Kathlyn Parker the Chemistry Department’s efforts in the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate and serving on the President’s Five-Year Plan Task Force on Graduate Education. Dr. Goroff has provided exemplary service as Graduate Program Director for the Chemistry Department from 2007 to 2012, which has been recognized with the 2011 Graduate School’s Award for Excellence in Service. She also currently serves on the University’s Graduate Council.
“I am delighted that Dr. Goroff has accepted this new position between my office and the Graduate School,” said Provost Assanis. “As the Associate Provost for the Integration of Research, Education, and Professional Development, she will help to identify, develop, and support strategic initiatives and collaborative activities to expand our student and post-doctoral fellow education and training through their synergistic engagement in research and professional development activities, including internships and entrepreneurship-based experiential learning.”
The Associate Provost will be charged with developing and overseeing the Office for the Integration of Research, Education, and Professional Development. In this position, Nancy will identify and cultivate opportunities for obtaining fellowships and program grants to support student research activities. She will work closely with the Vice President for Research, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Vice President for Economic Development and the Director of the Career Center, to develop, communicate and facilitate new internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research laboratories (e.g. BNL and local industries) and research-related economic development activities (e.g. Start-Up NY).
“Professional development and the intersections among research, undergraduate, and graduate education are areas of tremendous opportunity at Stony Brook, and I am very pleased that Nancy Goroff will be leading this effort,” said Charles Taber, Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School at Stony Brook University. “Nancy has been a strong and creative leader in graduate education, and this appointment will bring her considerable experience and skills to finding ways to improve student success and preparation for careers as professional researchers.”
Dr. Goroff will also support the development, in collaboration with existing programs, of synergistic educational and research activities aimed at the creation of strong pipelines of students and educators who will pursue STEM teaching, research and industry careers. Such programs include the Professional Education Program (PEP), the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME), the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA), and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). Working with the Dean of the Graduate School and the Dean of the School of Professional Development, she will support the creation and dissemination of professional development activities for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers, as well as explore opportunities for curricular development to promote the integration of research, education, and professional development. Working collaboratively with the Program Directors and the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Nancy will promote programs focused on helping women and underrepresented minority students to succeed in academic and career choices.
“Stony Brook enjoys top-notch academic programs and world-class research. We also have very exciting initiatives such as the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, the WISE and URECA programs, and new programs in entrepreneurship,” said Dr. Goroff. “I am looking forward to finding ways to strengthen the training we provide to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs by integrating these activities and leveraging opportunities across campus.”
Dr. Goroff earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Harvard University in 1990, and Ph.D. in Chemistry from UCLA in 1994. She held a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry at Michigan State University and a Research Corporation postdoctoral fellowship in chemical education at the University of Michigan before starting at Stony Brook in 1997. Dr. Goroff’s research focuses on organic materials, and especially carbon-based conductors and semi-conductors. In 2013, she was recognized with the American Chemical Society’s Award for Creative Research and Applications of Iodine Chemistry.
