STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 31, 2012 – Sajive Aleyas, M.D., has been appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonology, at Stony Brook School of Medicine, and will serve on the medical staff of Stony Brook University Hospital, announced Thomas Bilfinger, M.D., Professor of Surgery, and Team Leader and Co-Director of Stony Brook’s Lung Cancer Evaluation Center (LCEC).

Dr. Aleyas, a specialist in minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat lung cancer, also serves as Co-Director of Stony Brook’s LCEC, which provides a multidisciplinary approach to treating lung cancer and complex airway diseases and offers a wide array of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic processes. He comes to Stony Brook from Rockland Pulmonary and Medical Associates in Rockland, N.Y, where he served as a pulmonary critical attending care physician.

“As one of the few pulmonologists in the country with advanced training in interventional pulmonology, Dr. Aleyas brings highly specialized expertise to patients at Stony Brook’s Lung Cancer Evaluation Center,” says Dr. Bilfinger. “He is also the only physician on Long Island trained in electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, which takes a minimally invasive approach to diagnosing the pulmonary nodules that signify lung cancer.”

In his practice, Dr. Aleyas sees patients with complex airway disease and abnormal findings on their CT scans in all stages of lung cancer. His expertise includes minimally invasive bronchoscopy techniques including endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), cautery, laser, brachytherapy, stenting and ultrasonography.

Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care, Dr. Aleyas completed advanced training at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital in interventional pulmonology.

His medical training includes a fellowship in pulmonary critical care from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and a residency in internal medicine at Stony Brook.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Aleyas’ research interests cover new technologies for diagnosing lung cancer. These include optical biopsies and peripheral ultrasound that immediately identify pulmonary nodules without pathology.

Dr. Aleyas is available for outpatient appointments at Stony Brook’s Lung Cancer Evaluation Center. To make an appointment, please call 631-444-2981.
