STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 30, 2010 – “A Season of Giving” was the theme at Stony Brook University Medical Center’s Hospital Harvest Luncheon to support the National Pediatric MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Center at SBUMC, where vital medical research is conducted to find the answers to MS. The event was held at the Watermill in Smithtown on November 18. Event proceeds also support the University Hospital Auxiliary in its effort to help the hospital promote the health and welfare of the community.
Highlighting the Harvest Luncheon was the presentation of the “Woman of Distinction” award, given to Dr. Lauren Krupp, the Founder and Director of the National Pediatric MS Center at SBUMC. Dr. Krupp was recognized for her distinguished career in MS as an innovative, caring and committed physician.
Dr. Krupp, an internationally recognized expert in MS, began to suspect MS in children in her practice as more and more presented with MS-like symptoms. In 2002 she started the first multidisciplinary center in the country dedicated solely to children and adolescents with MS. The center has set the standard for pediatric MS care and offers optimal medical and psychosocial support to children and their families. The SBUMC center is now recognized as a Center of Excellence by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Dr. Krupp and colleagues care for children from all over the United States and many other countries.
Paul Anthony of WALK FM was MC at the event, which included live and silent auctions around the savory meal from the chefs at the Watermill.
