President Stanley Urges Long Islanders to Get Flu Vaccination

STONY BROOK, NY, December 5, 2012 – With the CDC announcement on Monday, Dec. 3, indicating an early start to the flu season with a particularly severe primary strain; “It is now more important than ever for people to protect themselves and others by getting the flu vaccination,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University and an infectious disease specialist by training.

In a new public service announcement, Dr. Stanley is shown getting his seasonal flu vaccine and urges Long Island residents to get vaccinated to protect themselves against the flu, and points them to a website resource that identifies where flu shots are available.

“I know how dangerous the influenza virus can be. It only takes a couple of minutes to protect yourself and those around you,” said Dr. Stanley, who also serves as the Chair of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), a group of experts who advise the heads of the Departments of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health and of all Federal departments that conduct or support life sciences research.
