STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 3, 2011 – David Fiorella, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, has been named a Member at Large of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery(SNIS). This distinction makes Dr. Fiorella part of the SNIS’s panel of officers, which includes only three Members at Large nationwide.
The SNIS appointed Dr. Fiorella as a Member at Large as a result of the 600-member society’s national leadership election results. SNIS members elected Dr. Fiorella because he is considered by colleagues to be an important national opinion leader, practicing specialist, and teacher in the areas of aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. The SNIS is comprised of physicians across the U.S. with backgrounds in interventional neuroradiology, endovascular surgery, and interventional neurology. These specialists have expertise in treating stroke, aneurysms, carotid stenosis, spinal abnormalities, and treat these and other neuroendovascular conditions by way of performing minimally invasive procedures.
At Stony Brook’s Cerebrovascular Center, Dr. Fiorella and colleagues routinely use cutting-edge technologies and minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat patients with all forms of neuroendovascular and cerebrovascular conditions.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the society and my fellow colleagues,” says Dr. Fiorella. “The SNIS is the field’s leading resource for professional training, practice development and clinical standards, all of which have helped advance neurointerventional medicine and raise the bar on quality of care for patients nationwide.”
Dr. Fiorella, who came to Stony Brook in October 2009, is a pioneer in the use of technology and imaging for the treatment of complex cerebrovascular lesions. He has led national and international training of physicians for numerous interventional neuroradiology procedures for more than 10 years. Before coming to Stony Brook, Dr. Fiorella practiced at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, and prior to that at the Cleveland Clinic.
Board certified in Radiology with a specialty in Neuroradiology, Dr. Fiorella is also a member of the American Society of Neuroradiology, the American College of Radiology, and the American Medical Association.
Editor’s note: Dr. Fiorella lives in Old Field, N.Y.
