Stony Brook University Cancer Center Announces Breast Cancer Awareness Month Programs
Robust roster of activities fosters understanding, raises funds for treatment and research

STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 5, 2012 — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Stony Brook University Cancer Center is offering numerous opportunities for patients, families and the community to come together to honor survivors and patients, raise funds, and learn more about prevention and treatment offered at Stony Brook.
During the month, the Cancer Center is offering a wide range of interesting events, so there’s something to appeal to everyone. These include fundraising efforts for cancer patients and families, fun exercise and beauty outings, and community updates on new developments in cancer treatments.
“It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction that our team of physicians are able to provide world-class care at Stony Brook, so that people can stay at home and get the best treatment available in the convenience of their own neighborhood,” said Brian J. O’Hea, MD, Chief, Division of Breast Surgery at Stony Brook Medicine, and Director of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center. He pointed out that the Breast Center recently earned a three-year reaccreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. “We provide this level of care to more than 450 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients each year,” Dr. O’Hea said.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month events for October are listed below:
• All October — Pizza for a Cure
Cara Mia in Sound Beach will donate $1 for every pizza sold.
• Oct. 7 — Cut for a Cure
Treat yourself to a new hairstyle at Legends Hair Designs in Stony Brook Village – (631) 751-0830. All proceeds support cancer patients at Stony Brook University Hospital.
• Oct. 10 — Community Update on Breast Cancer
Hear the latest information on breast cancer, including the latest treatment options. Educational exhibits are also presented to promote breast health awareness.
• Oct. 12 – Pink Glove Dance Video Competition
Beginning October 12 and through October 26, Stony Brook Medicine’s Pink Glove Dance video will be posted on www.pinkglovedance.com, along with other videos. Place your votes daily, as the top three winners receive $10,000, $5,000 and $2000 toward the breast cancer charity of their choice.
• Oct. 13 — Wellness for a Cure
Satya Yoga & Pilates in Mt. Sinai – (631) 828-5996 will donate time and talent to raise funds for Stony Brook cancer patients, 12 noon to 3:30 pm.
• Oct. 14 — Walk for Beauty
A fundraiser to support breast cancer research at Stony Brook University. This year’s Community Honoree is Patrick Parent of Selden, owner of Legends Hair Designs and Day Spa, which has participated in “Cut for a Cure” for the past four years. Barbara Meringolo of Stony Brook is the Breast Cancer Survivor Honoree.
• Oct. 14 — Cut for a Cure
Treat yourself to a new hairstyle at Arame Hair Salon in Port Jefferson – (631) 331-6633. All proceeds support cancer patients at Stony Brook University Hospital.
• Oct. 15 — Go Pink for a Cure
Pink hair extensions will be sold in 19 North Waiting Room at Stony Brook University Hospital, 10 am to 2 pm.
• Oct. 17 — Go Pink for a Cure
Pink hair extensions will be sold in Student Activities Center main campus, 12 noon – 2 pm.
• Oct. 18 — Fall Fashion Festival
Cancer fundraiser dinner, basket auction and fashion show. Proceeds benefit Stony Brook cancer patients.
• Oct. 20 — Jump for a Cure
Take an air dive and raise funds for Stony Brook cancer patients. Visit
www.skydivelongisland.com or call (631) 208-3900 for rates. Skydive Long Island, Calverton – 8 am until dusk.
• Oct. 22 — Massage Happy Hour
Local medical message staff donate time and talent to raise funds for Stony Brook cancer patients — Cancer Center, 12 noon – 2 pm.
• Oct. 28 — Massage a Thon
Exhale Medical Massage in Stony Brook – (631) 605-1968 will donate time and talent to raise funds for Stony Brook cancer patients, 12 noon – 5 pm.
• Date TBD — You’ve Been Flocked
Mt. Sinai cheerleaders will flock the Cancer Center lawn.
