STONY BROOK–April 18, 2018 —
Forbes
has released its 2018 list of “
America’s Best Value Colleges
,” and Stony Brook University ranks #41 overall among 300 schools in the United States that provide students with the most bang for the buck, up from #83 in last year’s ranks.
Stony Brook ranks at #18 among public colleges and universities, up from #29 in 2018, and received the highest ranking of all SUNY schools.
The ranking is based on data from the Department of Education’s College Scorecard, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and PayScale which examined alumni earnings (20%), net price (20%), net debt (20%), school quality (20%), timely graduation (10%), and population of Pell Grant recipients (10%). Forbes also considered fees, room and board in addition to list price. Also, drop-out risk and timely graduation rates (high six-year graduation rates) were figured into the ranking.
Forbes tweaked its methodology for the 2018 list to emphasize financial indicators like earnings, price, and debt. For example, Forbes calculated the net price of attending college, which considers fees and room and board in addition to tuition cost instead of list price. For the first time, Forbes also consolidated drop-out risk and timely graduation rates, rewarding schools with high six-year graduation rates.
