GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROJECT AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY

Project Will Save $832,000 in Energy Costs and Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 3,800 Tons a Year, the Equivalent of Taking 730 Cars off the Road

Major Energy Efficiency Project Supports Governor Cuomo’s Nation-Leading Goal to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 40 Percent by 2030

STONY BROOK, NY — November 10, 2017–Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of a comprehensive energy efficiency project at Stony Brook University in Suffolk County that will save the campus more than $832,000 in annual energy costs while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3,800 tons a year – the equivalent of taking more than 730 cars off the road. The project support’s Governor Cuomo’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030, which is part of the Governor’s Reforming the Energy Vision strategy to build a statewide energy system that is clean, resilient and afforda

ble for all New Yorkers.

We are taking aggressive action to combat climate change
in
our communities across the state, and
innovative energy efficiency projects
are key to cutting costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,”
Governor Cuomo

said.
 “New York
is leading the nation in the green energy movement and pioneering
clean technologies to protect our environment for generations to come.”

The $5.7 million initiative was financed and implemented by the New York Power Authority in partnership with The State University of New York. The project also directly supports the
BuildSmart
NY program, which calls for state-owned buildings to realize a 20 percent improvement in energy efficiency by 2020. The energy efficiency improvements included upgrades to the heating and cooling systems at six buildings on the Stony Brook campus, including installation of a chilled water loop interconnection between the university’s Centers for Molecular Medicine and Life Sciences buildings.

Richard Kauffman, Chairman of Energy and Finance, New York State, said,
“Under Governor Cuomo, New York is leading by example with state buildings,
taking on the job to affordably and effectively reduce emissions whi
le cutting costs to taxpayers. By taking these actions, NYPA and Stony Brook University are showing how Reforming the Energy Vision, or REV, can combat climate change by helping us build a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system.”

Gil C. Q
uiniones, NYPA president and CEO, said,
“As part of the state’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint and energy use, NYPA is implementing hundreds of millions of dollars in energy-saving measures at public buildings each year
.
These comprehensive energy-saving measures at Stony Brook University are emblematic of the Governor’s ambitious energy goals and help the university meet its objectives of saving costs while becoming more energy efficient.”

SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson, former U.S. Under Secretary of Energy

said,
“SUNY has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions
by 27
percent compared to 1990 levels, and is committed to meeting both the New York State and Paris Climate Accord goals with the support and leadership of our governor as well as NYPA and our campuses, such as Stony Brook University. The significance of this investment is the triple-bottom line impact: reduced campus operating costs and carbon footprint
,
and increased educational awareness for sustainable living.”

Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., Pre
sident of Stony Brook University, said, “
Stony Brook University is always looking for ways to expand our sustainability practices, find cost efficiencies, and thus be as environmenta
lly conscious as possible. With help from the Governor’s
BuildSmartNY
program and strategic implementation through our friends at NYPA, this initiative will realize savings and operating efficiencies that will have a positive impact on our bottom line for years to come.”

Senator Ken
LaValle
 said,
“I am pleased that SUNY Stony Brook and the New York Power Authority have teamed up over the last few years to formulate a comprehensive and effective plan to improve energy efficiency, save costs and reduce emissions.  The results that will be achieved will save costs and improve our environment.  The techniques that are being implemented will serve as models for other institutions across New York State.”

Assemblyman Steve
Englebright
 said,
“Improving the energy efficiency of our public buildings is one of the most powerful tools we have for meeting our state’s goal of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that are warming our climate.
It is quick, low-cost, and the energy savings from efficiency retrofits will significantly reduce Stony Bro
ok University’s energy costs. With the assistance of NYPA, this newly-completed project will help our state realize its target goal of a 20 percent improvement in energy efficiency of state-owned buildings by 2020.”

Reforming the Energy Vision

Reforming the Energy Vision is Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s strategy to lead on climate change and grow New York’s economy. REV is building a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers by stimulating investment in clean technologies like solar, wind, and energy efficiency and generating 50 percent of the state’s electricity needs from renewable energy by 2030. Already, REV has driven 795 percent growth in the statewide solar market, enabled over 105,000 low-income households to permanently cut their energy bills with energy efficiency, and created thousands of jobs in manufacturing, engineering, and other clean tech sectors. REV is ensuring New York reduces statewide greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and achieves the internationally recognized target of reducing emissions 80 percent by 2050.
