: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation was awarded Best New Journal in Science, Technology and Medicine by the American Association of Publishers (AAP). Stony Brook University’s Lauren Hale, PhD, is Sleep Health’s Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Hale is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine, and a core faculty member of the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook University.

The AAP’s annual PROSE awards, established in 1976, recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 50 categories. The PROSE entries are judged by peer publishers, librarians and medical professionals.

Sleep Health is a multidisciplinary journal published by the National Sleep Foundation that explores the role of sleep in health and seeks to advance the sleep health of all members of society.

“Sleep is a universal phenomenon that affects health, cognition, and well-being,” said Dr. Hale. “We created the new journal to serve as a forum for inquiry into sleep beyond its pathologies, focusing instead on the health benefits of sleep while prioritizing the attainment of restorative rest for all members of society,” added Dr. Hale.

Four issues of the Journal have been published since March 2015. The editors accept original articles on research, as well as reviews, special topics, editorials and letters to the editor.

“By welcoming submissions from a wide range of medical and social science specialties such as public health, psychology, epidemiology, sociology, and transportation studies, we not only facilitate the deepening of our understanding of sleep and its impact on health but foster the development of the field by encouraging the broadening of perspectives on sleep in society,” explained Dr. Hale.
