WHAT

The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics will host the unveiling of the “Iconic Wall,” a site-specific permanent 25.25’ x 20’ x2” installation/sculpture depicting significant equations and diagrams from mathematics and physics that span several thousand years.

Based on an idea proposed by Dr. Nina Douglas, it was designed by Dr. Douglas and Stony Brook University’s Dr. Anthony Phillips in collaboration with members of the Physics and Math Department at the University.

Adapted by celebrated sculptor Christian White, who joined with three other stone carvers to create the project in two years, this relief has been installed in the lobby of the Simons Center, filling a wall 465 square feet in area.  In conjunction of the unveiling of the “Iconic Wall,” an exhibit featuring a historical timeline detailing the equations and physical diagrams depicted on the “Iconic Wall” will be on view as will video footage showing the sculpture’s creation.

A reception will open the event with a dedication and lecture about the art and math on the wall to follow.  It is free and opened to the public.
