President Stanley delivers 2014 State of the University Address

STONY BROOK, NY—September 24, 2014–In his fifth annual State of the University Address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, talked about the growth of the University, the importance of continued federal support of research, and announced its new Finish in Four fund and Online Learning program, both student initiatives created to increase four-year graduation rates, aid in individual college costs, and alleviate education debt.

Finish in Four is a pilot study that will leverage higher four-year graduation rates by providing financial support for students who have been allotted the

maximum in financial aid. The pilot study will kick off this year and provide up to $250,000 in financial aid to students who are in good academic standing.

The new Online Teaching initiative provides individual grants of $10,000 – $50,000 to faculty who propose courses that are innovative, that offer a significant impact on effective practices, and that enhance student success. It will offer highly enrolled gateway classes like chemistry and  biology in an online setting allowing students to rarely, if ever, be locked out of core classes. This fund represents at $1M commitment for the next four years.

President Stanley also welcomed 181 new faculty and administrators and highlighted the remarkable rise of Stony Brook University through continued funding, philanthropy, and growth. He stated that all of the growth has been fueled by an increase of revenue that has now reached a total annual budget of $2.4B.
