STONY BROOK, N.Y., August 22, 2014Stony Brook University’s online Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration (HEA) has been ranked fifth in the country by TheBestSchools.org, a leading resource for campus and online education – an impressive feat for a program introduced just four years ago. The rankings, which recognize the best 25 in the country, were selected based on academic excellence, range of courses provided, awards, rankings, faculty strength, and reputation.

“Stony Brook University’s Online M.A. in HEA program combines aspects of theory and practice within the changing landscape of American higher education,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dennis N. Assanis. “It provides a comprehensive program of study that explores student affairs, academic affairs, and college and university administration. Stony Brook University is committed to developing more online offerings so that programs such as this one, developed by our internationally renowned faculty, can benefit students around the country by providing them with a more diverse and culturally rich experience.”

Offered through its School of Professional Development (SPD), Stony Brook’s online Master of Arts in HEA program is for students seeking to advance their careers in institutions such as community colleges, government agencies, student affairs, and four-year colleges, both public and private. It currently enrolls approximately 175 students from across the country, with the greatest concentration of students from the Northeast. The HEA program is practitioner based, with faculty having extensive leadership, research, and administrative roles in higher education. The program also focuses on globalization and leadership in higher education, including an annual study abroad opportunity. Most recently, HEA students studied abroad in China; in summer 2015, the HEA program will be traveling to Italy as part of a comparative higher education course that includes visits to several universities.

“We are honored and excited to have received this recognition for our online program,” said Dr. Richard Gatteau, Faculty Director of the Higher Education Administration program. “Our faculty and staff have worked hard to build a high quality program in a short period of time, and we are grateful to have an exceptional group of students and alumni earning their HEA degree at Stony Brook.”

The Master’s in HEA program, which requires 30 credits, includes expansive core courses, electives, a master’s project, and an optional practicum. A sample of courses offered include:

  • College Student Development Theory
  • Advising and Counseling
  • Crisis Management and Prevention in Higher Education
  • Student Affairs Administration

SPD has been a leader in online graduate learning since 1996. Its fully online, asynchronous programs have made it possible for hundreds of working professionals to earn their degrees.
