Patrick Hearing Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology

STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 12, 2015 – Patrick Hearing, PhD, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. The Academy is the prestigious leadership group of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), the world’s oldest and largest life science organization.
According to the ASM, Academy Fellows are eminent leaders in the field of microbiology and are relied upon for authoritative advice and information on critical issues in microbiology. Fellows are elected through a highly selective peer review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Dr. Hearing and other newly elected fellows will be recognized at the ASM General Meeting in June.
A professor at Stony Brook for 30 years, Dr. Hearing is an educator and world-renowned molecular virologist whose laboratory research centers on the DNA tumor virus Adenovirus, its implications in cancer, and the development of gene therapies for the treatment of disease. He is also a member of a National Institutes of Health Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) with other experts from various fields of science, medicine, and ethics, who evaluate recombinant DNA research endeavors and gene therapy clinical trials across the country.
“Professor Hearing has had an extraordinary amount of experience with gene therapy, and his work with Adenovirus vectors at Stony Brook has led to new directions in gene therapy approaches,” said Jorge Benach, PhD, Distinguished University Professor, Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases. “He is most deserving of being elected a fellow of the Academy and will continue to be a leader in our field.”
Dr. Hearing publishes widely in the fields of microbiology and virology. His laboratory research includes collaborative work with Stony Brook Medicine faculty, and he mentors graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists involved in the gene research.
