19 SBU Summer Research High School Students Named Intel Semifinalist

Pictured are the 2014 Simons Summer Research High School Students. Stony Brook University hosts many other HS summer programs including the Garcia Research Scholar program, CESAME programs, as well as students involved in independent faculty-mentored research.

STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 8, 2015 – Nineteen (19) Stony Brook University summer research high school students were named semifinalists in the prestigious 2015 Intel Science Talent Search. These young researchers were selected for the research they did while participating in various Stony Brook University summer programs where they worked in labs with renowned faculty, graduate and undergraduate student mentors. Winners were chosen from more than 1,800 entries, the highest number since 1998.

Following is the elite list of young researchers who participated in summer research programs including the Simons Summer Research Program and the Garcia Center: Polymers at Engineered Interfaces – Research Scholar Program:

2015 Intel Science Talent Search contest this year features an expanded pot of prize money, including three first-place awards of $150,000 each. Additionally, each semifinalist named today wins $1,000, plus an equal amount for his or her school. The contest will recognize achievement in three distinct areas: Basic Research, which is more theoretical in nature; Global Good, which addresses real-world problems; and Innovation, which emphasizes creativity.  40 finalists will be named on January 21, 2015.
