STONY BROOK, NY, October 10, 2014 — Health news service HealthDay has awarded its first annual scholarship to Alex Kramer, a student enrolled in the School of Journalism’s Master of Science Program at Stony Brook University.

The $2,000 scholarship is to be awarded annually to an outstanding student who intends to seek a career in health or science journalism; Kramer was selected to receive the scholarship in May. The scholarship, which is applied toward tuition, also provides a Fall internship at HealthDay, the largest provider of consumer health news in the country.

Kramer is originally from North Andover, MA and is a graduate of Brandeis University. He enjoys distance running and was a year-round athlete for 12 seasons both as an undergraduate student and as a member of the Stony Brook University Varsity Cross Country and Track Team where he averaged 80-100 miles a week.  Kramer is also a contributing writer for the Stony Brook Statesman, the largest on-campus newspaper. This is the last semester of his master’s degree program.

He will be conducting research, reporting and writing video scripts to create digital content for the news website. “This internship will give me the opportunity to take the health reporting skills I have developed at Stony Brook and apply them to a real news provider,” said Kramer.

HealthDay, founded in 1998, is a leading producer and syndicator of evidence-based health news and the largest syndicator of that news to Internet sites. Its work appears on more than 5,000 websites, including, Everyday Health, WebMD, MSN Healthy Living, iVillage, US News and World Report, and Newsday. George Giokas, HealthDay’s chairman and co-founder, is an instructor in the School of Journalism.

The Master of Science Program in Journalism is the only journalism master’s program in the State University of New York system and focuses on the coverage of science, health, the environment and technology. “There are strong parallels between Stony Brook’s School of Journalism and HealthDay. Health and science are increasingly important topics in journalism and we are proud to support the program financially and include their scholarship recipients in our internship program,” said HealthDay CEO Daniel McKillen.

“The scholarship is a wonderful partnership that will advance two major goals,” said Howard Schneider, Dean of Stony Brook’s School of Journalism. “It will help support and train the next generation of journalists covering health and medicine and it builds a bridge between Stony Brook and a major news outlet in an area of coverage that will be one of our distinct specialties. We are extremely appreciative and excited about the opportunity.”
