Marjolie Leonard Named Director for Title IX and Risk Management at Stony Brook University

STONY BROOK, N.Y., September 10, 2014 – Marjolie Leonard had been appointed as Director for Title IX and Risk Management effective immediately, announced Stony Brook University President, Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. In this role, Leonard serves as the designated agent for implementing and coordinating all aspects of its Title IX compliance efforts for Stony Brook University. Leonard will also oversee the Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action and is responsible for implementing the risk management program. Leonard’s announcement comes after serving as the Interim Director for Title IX and Risk Management for three months.
“Marjolie brings outstanding credentials and extensive knowledge of the relevant policies and law, and so is extremely qualified to serve in this important role,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “As Interim Director, she illustrated exemplary leadership and I am confident that her strong legal background coupled with her compassionate approach to these sensitive issues will strengthen this office. She will also continue to support Stony Brook’s strong anti-discrimination policies and practices.”
Leonard has also directed the Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action (ODAA) since spring 2013, and is experienced in receiving and investigating campus Title IX complaints. Prior to her joining the ODAA, Leonard worked in University Community Standards in the Office of Student Affairs in which she served as a Judicial Officer, resolving allegations of non-academic misconduct as a mediator and administrative hearing officer. She worked collaboratively with the University Police Department, Campus Residences, Counseling and Psychological Services, University Counsel, Center for Prevention and Outreach, Academic Affairs, Dean of Student’s Office, Disability Support Services, ODAA, and International Services. Leonard also developed and presented training for students, faculty and staff serving on the University’s Administrative Hearing Board.
A graduate of Albany Law and University of Albany where she earned her B.A. in Criminal Justice and M.S. in Educational Administration and Policy Studies, Leonard practiced as an attorney and mediator prior to joining Stony Brook University. Leonard currently resides in Coram, New York.
