STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 24, 2014 – It was a Stony Brook residency Match Day like none other – Fourth-year medical student Roger Luo surprised his girlfriend and classmate, Gaby Chancay, with a marriage proposal. The story was captured live by CBS television, and the University videotaped the Match countdown and proposal moment.
Tucked in Gaby’s official residency assignment envelope were two letters. One was her residency assignment letter, and the other was Roger’s letter of proposal. Though puzzled at first, Gaby figured it all out, responded with a resounding…yes…and their surprise engagement moment unfolded with emotion and joy, including from some of their classmates who surrounded them. A perfect match.
Their actual residency matches were a hit too – Gaby matched to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NY in Internal Medicine; Roger matched to New Jersey Medical School/Rutgers in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Roger and Gaby are among the 127 fourth-year Stony Brook University School of Medicine students who matched on March 21 to residencies around the country, in New York and 17 other states. Slightly more than half (51 percent) will remain in New York State.
Sixteen students will launch their medical careers at Stony Brook. Their residency training begins in July. The group will enter residency programs such as Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
