Applications are being accepted by SUNY from November 1 through January 3, 2104 with final selections being made in spring 2014.
Announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo in spring 2013, the New York State Master Teacher Program seeks to identify, reward, and support master teachers throughout New York State. The role of master teachers as professional mentors and content experts is key to developing the current cadre of outstanding educators as well as developing skilled future teachers.
“New York’s Master Teacher Program will help good math and science teachers across Long Island become great,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “One great teacher can have an extraordinary influence on many students, and thanks to the leadership of Gov. Cuomo and Chancellor Zimpher, we can cultivate more great teachers on Long Island who will mentor their peers and help students realize what many already know — STEM disciplines are interesting, engaging and second only to healthcare in job opportunities right now.”
Modeled after the successful Math for America program currently operating in New York City and other sites nationwide, the Stony Brook University Master Teacher Fellowship program provides an opportunity for middle- and high- school mathematics and science teachers to deepen their practice and strengthen their leadership skills through professional development and enrichment.
“The important impact that this initiative will have on the preparation of teachers in STEM fields and on all our teacher and leader preparation programs, pre-service and in-service teachers, and students across the region is inspiring,” said Dorit Kauffman, Professor of Linguistics and Director of the Stony Brook University Professional Education Program. “We at Stony Brook look forward to working with SUNY to mount a strong Master Teacher Program to promote highly effective teaching and leadership throughout Long Island and beyond.”
During the program, Master Teacher Fellows will:
- Engage in peer mentoring and intensive content-oriented professional development opportunities throughout the academic year;
- Work closely with pre-service and early career fellows to foster a supportive environment for the next generation of STEM teachers; and,
- Receive a $15,000 stipend per year over 4 years for participation in the program (total compensation of $60,000 per Fellow).
- Attend required regular cohort meetings, participate in and lead several professional development sessions each year, and participate in the training of pre-service and early career educators as part of the Master Teacher program.
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be a certified, currently employed teacher in New York State, with a minimum of 4 years of experience teaching STEM disciplines.
- Have a current course load of at least 60% in STEM disciplines, teaching grades 6-12.
- Be rated “effective” or “highly effective” on your Annual Professional Performance Review
