Prestigious Wallace Fellowship Helps Prepare K-12 Teachers for Leadership Roles
STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 17, 2009 — Stony Brook University’s Educational Leadership Program has been awarded a $900,000 grant from the Wallace Foundation and the New York State Education Department to help high-needs Long Island school districts develop effective school leaders. The grant will fund an intensive, two-year program that combines graduate coursework, team-based research projects, fieldwork, and in-service seminar training.

Nineteen teachers from the following districts were selected for inclusion in the program based upon recommendations from their school administrators: Freeport, Hempstead, Roosevelt, Westbury, Amityville, Copiague, Longwood, Sachem, William Floyd and Wyandanch. Together the teachers compose the Wallace Fellows, a co-hort that will work together over the two years to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to lead high-needs schools.
According to Dr. Robert Scheidet, co-author of the grant and coordinator of clinical internships for Stony Brook’s Educational Leadership Program, this co-hort approach “enables the Wallace Fellows to become a cohesive group that will support each other as they put into practice the information learned in the program.”
“Our schools are only as good as the administrators who are leading them. This Wallace Foundation/NYSED grant will allow Stony Brook University to assist the high-needs school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties to develop highly qualified administrators” said Dr. Robert Moraghan, director of Stony Brook’s Education Leadership programs and co-author of the grant. “We at Stony Brook University are proud to be working with the local school districts in developing tomorrow’s educational leaders.”
