STONY BROOK, NY, October 06, 2011 – The Stony Brook University Division of Campus Residences Haiti Relief Ad Hoc Committee has raised $10,000 to assist children at the Maison Fortuné Orphanage, an organization that provides housing, schooling and medical care to more than 200 orphans in Haiti. Maison Fortuné took in an additional 100 children from a nearby orphanage that was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 2010.
The committee raised support through various fundraisers such as “Wear Jeans to Work Fridays” and the “Have a Heart for Haiti” campaign; as well as through a portion of funds set aside in the annual ‘Tis the Season campaign, which is a student-centered fundraising program that provides clothes and gifts for the needy during the holiday season. Maison Fortuné has listed Stony Brook University as one of the top 10 “Universities Making a Difference” for their organization.
The Division of Campus Residences hopes to continue its relationship with the Maison Fortuné Orphanage and eventually send a group to volunteer. If interested in making a donation, please contact Dr. Laura Valente at 631.632.6767 or by email at laura.valente@stonybrook.edu.
