Stony Brook Children’s Names New Chief of Neonatology
Dr. Dennis Davidson brings both clinical and research expertise to role

, N.Y., July 18, 2012 – Dennis Davidson, MD, has been appointed Professor of Pediatrics at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and will serve on the medical staff at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital as Chief of Neonatology-Perinatal Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, announced Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Davidson comes to Stony Brook Children’s from Hofstra University-North Shore LIJ Health System School of Medicine, where he served as Professor of Pediatrics, and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, where he was Principal Investigator, Inflammation and Immunology Center of Excellence.
In his role as the new Division Chief, Dr. Davidson’s goal is to lead the neonatology team in developing a national reputation for the Stony Brook Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It is currently one of the busiest on Long Island, as well as the first in New York with all-private, single-bedded rooms. He plans to build on these strengths, with a focus on quality-centered neonatal care, excellence in physician education and an increased emphasis on research for serious neonatal disorders.
Dr. Davidson has had a distinguished career on many fronts. As an educator, he has taught pediatric residents at Columbia University, Stony Brook, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Hofstra University. As a researcher, he has served as Principal or Collaborating Investigator on multicenter trials studying pulmonary issues in newborns to develop new standards of care. His research focuses specifically on novel safe and effective anti-inflammatory therapy for chronic lung disease in premature infants. And as a clinician, he has had an active practice for more than 31 years, with a focus on neonatal lung disorders, as well as developing new strategies for patient safety and best outcomes.
Dr. Davidson, named as a ‘Best Doctor’ in New York Magazine’s 2012 issue, is board certified in Pediatrics, with sub-board certifications in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He received bachelor’s degree in biology from St. Lawrence University. He received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL, and performed his residency in Pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He then underwent fellowship training at Columbia University in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and Neonatology.
