STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER FORMS DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL TO SUPPORT MISSION

STONY BROOK, NY, July 16, 2008 – A new group of civic-minded community members recently joined together in support of Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC). The group, called the “Development Council,” was established with a mission to further the Medical Center’s vision of becoming a world-class organization through philanthropy and community support.

Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean of Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Steven L. Strongwater, M.D., Hospital CEO, recognize the need for community representation and private funding and work directly with the Council. Through corporate, private and civic connections, the Development Council will work to raise awareness and strengthen relationships throughout the region.

Immediate plans include expanding the Council’s size to ensure representation throughout the Medical Center’s geographic area. Current members and SBUMC leadership are speaking with residents and community members from the East End, South Shore and Nassau County.

Charles Ryan, JD, PhD, is chair of the Council, which includes Michael Ardolino, Olga Belleau, Bob Coughlan, Sr., Leah Dunaief, Duffy Mich, Scott Neher and Gloria Snyder. The group’s diversity, experience and talent position them well to meet the needs of the Medical Center.

Dr. Ryan, an attorney for Forest Laboratories, has been associated with Stony Brook University since the early 90’s when he completed his doctoral program in biology and pathology. Dr. Ryan and his wife Dr. Maria Emmanuel Ryan, who is president of the Stony Brook University Alumni Association, live in Laurel Hollow with their son.

As the Vice President of the State Bank of Long Island, Olga has grown the bank’s business while forming meaningful local partnerships. Olga and her family live in Setauket.

Robert Coughlan, principle at TRITEC Real Estate Co., Inc., and his family also have a long history of supporting Stony Brook University. His sons are active within the University community and Bob is interested in growing the Medical Center. Also a resident of Setauket, Bob and his wife spend time with their children and grandchildren, many of whom live locally.

His success has helped him build strong relationships with a diverse cross section of Long Island organizations and various planning and architectural review boards.
