July 12, 2012, Stony Brook, NY— The 17th Annual Stony Brook Film Festival presents the East Coast premiere of Behind the Orange Curtain, a documentary that explores the tragedy of prescription drug addiction. The film screens on Friday, July 20 at 7:00 pm, the second day of the ten-day Festival, at Staller Center for the Arts Main Stage. Brent Huff, the director of the film along with Executive Producer Natalie Costa and others will be on hand for a question and answer period after the screening.

Behind the Orange Curtain
is a riveting feature-length documentary that reports on young, privileged teenagers who have died of drug overdoes in record numbers in Orange County, California. Many of these tragic deaths from pain medications included Opana, OxyContin and Hydrocodone, and the film’s relevance to Long Islanders with its drug-related tragedies will undoubtedly resonate with filmgoers.

The film began as a project for Red Ribbon Week, a drug and alcohol awareness program in local schools but soon became much more. Professional filmmakers took on the project and found that floodgates opened with parents telling how they lost a child. Matt Coker of Orange County Weekly reports, “How easily dangerous drugs find themselves into the mouths of babes who were not prescribed them is an overarching theme. Peer pressure and rave culture are fleshed out as possible gateways. The pharmaceutical industry’s flooding of prescription pills into society, the ‘dirty doctor system’ that often allows those medications to reach addicts and legislative efforts to hopefully stem the flow are all explored onscreen.”
