STONY BROOK, JULY 1, 2010- Jeffrey C. Hellinger, M.D., FACC, a specialist in Pediatric Cardiovascular Imaging, has joined Stony Brook University Medical Center as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Radiology. Appointed by Margaret M. McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of Pediatrics, Dr. Hellinger will center his practice within SBUMC’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Program under Director Michael Poon, M.D. He will also head the newly created Advanced Imaging and Informatics Laboratory.
Dr. Hellinger comes to SBUMC from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). His appointment comes as SBUMC is establishing The Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital, home to the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the area with more than 100 full-time pediatric specialists with a full range of medical services for infants, children and teenagers. Stony Brook Children’s will serve the growing healthcare needs of children in Suffolk County.
As an innovator in radiation dose saving techniques in pediatric cardiovascular computed tomography (CT), Dr. Hellinger’s emphasis on ultra- and low dose radiation protocols is an important component to the services he brings to Stony Brook Children’s, which is the only children’s hospital on Long Island to provide such expertise and advanced 320-slice CT scanner technology.
“The appointment of Dr. Hellinger brings a specialist with unique skills that enhance our entire pediatric program,” says Dr. McGovern. “His expertise in cardiovascular imaging will lead to more detailed and quicker diagnoses for infants and children of all ages with cardiovascular problems as well as other conditions and diseases. In addition, with Dr. Hellinger’s work on ultra- and low dose cardiovascular CT, we will further improve patient safety.”
“Dr. Hellinger adds a whole new dimension to our program, and together we will create a new paradigm for clinical, research, and educational collaboration between Cardiology and Radiology in forming a world class Cardiovascular Imaging program at Stony Brook and a regional referral center for challenging cases in pediatric and adult cardiovascular disease,” emphasizes Dr. Poon.
Dr. Hellinger spent the last four years practicing as an Assistant Professor and Attending Physician at CHOP, where he was the Director of the Department of Radiology’s Cardiovascular Imaging and its Medical Imaging Laboratory. At CHOP Dr. Hellinger introduced advanced cardiovascular computed tomographic angiography (CTA) on a 64-channel multidector row CT scanner for children of all ages and for many pediatric congenital and acquired cardiovascular conditions, such as congenital heart disease, coarctation, vascular rings, vascular malformations, pulmonary embolism, and trauma.
Dr. Hellinger also held clinical appointments in Philadelphia at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, working in the adult cardiovascular and thoracic imaging sections.
Dr. Hellinger has lectured to national and international audiences on cardiovascular CT and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). As an adult and pediatric interventional radiologist, Dr. Hellinger has also lectured and contributed clinically and academically to the field of Interventional Radiology. Dr. Hellinger’s mentoring of trainees led to a 2009 Fellow Training Award and 2004 and 2008 Certificate of Merit Awards from the Radiologic Society of North America.
A graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Hellinger completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Dr. Hellinger then completed Fellowships in adult and pediatric Interventional Radiology at Emory and Cardiovascular Imaging at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American College of Cardiology, American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, the Radiologic Society of North America, and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (Founding Member).
Dr. Hellinger presides on the editorial board of the Journal of Computed Assisted Tomography and is a reviewer for numerous journals, including Radiographics, the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, Pediatric Radiology, and Congenital Heart Disease.
A native of Miami, Florida, Dr. Hellinger resides in New York City with his family.
