On July 17, during the 36th annual Southampton Writers Conference at Stony Brook Southampton, the MFA in Writing and MFA in Theatre programs will hold an information session in Chancellors Hall from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The information session is for all those interested in pursuing graduate degrees in these disciplines, those interested in taking only a few courses, and those interested in taking only those courses that relate to specific projects in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, and playwriting.
The director of the MFA program, Robert Reeves, will introduce Associate Director Carla Caglioti, who will discuss the myriad opportunities for graduate study at the campus: from full matriculation as an MFA candidate to individual courses aligned with prospective students’ interests, and everything in between.
Nick Mangano, the director of theatre and film for Southampton Arts, will talk about the newly approved MFA in Theatre and Film at the Stony Brook Southampton campus.
Magdalene Brandeis, Manhattan Faculty Coordinator, will join Reeves and Caglioti to discuss the Manhattan track to the MFA, in which students combine academic coursework at the Manhattan facility during the fall and spring terms with Writers Conference participation in the summer at the Southampton campus.
Southampton Writers Conference coordinator Christian McLean will talk about overseas writing workshops offered by the MFA program. The first workshop was held in Florence in January 2011; plans are in development to add a 2012 workshop in Kenya. The session will also include readings by current and former MFA candidates.
All who attend the information session will be given a free ticket to Sunday evening’s staged reading of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Marsha Norman’s “The Master Butchers Singing Club,” a New York premiere at 8 p.m. in the Avram Theater offered in association with the resident theatre company at the Writers Conference, New York’s Ensemble Studio Theatre.
