STONY BROOK, NY, May 11, 2011 – Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, announced today that Dexter A. Bailey Jr. will join the university’s leadership team as the Vice President for Advancement effective June 8. Reporting to President Stanley and serving as a member of his senior management team, Bailey will provide leadership for the University’s development and alumni relations operations and also serve as the executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation.

“We are very excited that Dexter has agreed to lead the Advancement mission at Stony Brook University,” said President Stanley. “His experience and background in both public and private research institutions is precisely what Stony Brook needs to lead the University in creating opportunities and securing private funding sources and partnerships, and I am confident that together we will bring Stony Brook to the next level of growth and success.”

Bailey brings to Stony Brook a broad range of experience in development and alumni affairs. He spent the past five years as Vice President for Development and Alumni relations at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he managed a $4.1 million budget and a staff of 49 representing 17 academic departments and more than 32,000 alumni world-wide. While at WPI, Bailey built a sustainable development and alumni relations program, positioning WPI to successfully prepare for and implement a comprehensive seven-year fundraising campaign. Under his leadership, WPI increased alumni participation from 14 to 20 percent and engaged core constituents in the important work of institutional advancement, most notably the Board of Trustees, Alumni Association, and the campus’ academic leadership.

Prior to WPI, Bailey directed external relations for intercollegiate athletics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he led the effort to raise $150 million in gifts and pledges for intercollegiate athletics — the most successful fund-raising performance at the University during that time frame. Before joining Berkeley, he served as assistant dean for development and external relations at the University of Washington’s School of Law and as assistant dean for development and alumni affairs for Ohio University’s College of Education. Prior to that, he was press secretary for the Ohio House of Representatives.

“The invitation to join the Stony Brook University community under the leadership of President Stanley is a tremendous honor,” said Bailey. “The opportunities are boundless and I aspire to get more alumni and friends engaged in the life of the university today. Stony Brook is a leader in higher education and our students and faculty deserve the critical philanthropic support necessary to achieve greatness.”

Bailey earned a BS in Journalism from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and an MBA from the University of Toledo. He and his wife, Angela, are the parents of three young children.
