STONY BROOK,
N.Y., April 16, 2012 — James C. Nielsen, M.D., has been appointed Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Chief of Pediatric Cardiology for Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital, announced Margaret McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s, and Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine.
Dr. Nielsen is an internationally recognized authority on the advanced application of noninvasive imaging technologies in congenital heart disease evaluation, particularly through his innovations in cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). He comes to Stony Brook from Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he ran a robust clinical practice, trained advanced imaging fellows in congenital and pediatric cardiac MRI, and served as an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Radiology and Pediatrics.
“A true leader and a dedicated clinician, Dr. Nielsen is a wonderful addition not only to Stony Brook Children’s, but also to Suffolk County,” said Dr. McGovern. “His experience and training bring a new standard of care in pediatric cardiac imaging to the community.”
In his practice, Dr. Nielsen focuses on the evaluation of pediatric and congenital heart disease in children of all ages, from pre-birth through adolescence and into adulthood. His highly specialized expertise using echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT marries technological breakthroughs with the expertise to deliver precise, accurate readings – key when it comes to the notoriously difficult-to-image beating heart. He is particularly interested in fetal echocardiography and works with high-risk pregnancies to identify potential problems early and plan appropriately for the delivery.
A gifted educator and renowned researcher, Dr. Nielsen has trained cardiac fellows at top institutions worldwide. He has lectured extensively on cardiac MRI and echocardiography at national and international symposiums, as well as published more than 20-peer review papers or book chapters since 2002. In addition, he has pioneered novel clinical applications of cardiac MRI. He continues to pursue clinical projects that utilize the noninvasive imaging tools of echocardiography and cardiac MRI to address clinically important questions and improve the usefulness of the technology.
Dr. Nielsen is board-certified in Pediatric Cardiology. He received his M.D. degree from Tulane University, where he also completed a residency in Pediatrics and served as Pediatric Chief Resident. He was a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a Senior Pediatric Cardiology Fellow and at Children’s Hospital Boston.
