effective February 14, announced President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr., M.D. In this newly established position, Crosson will be Stony Brook’s primary liaison for state and federal legislative matters, and will oversee the offices of Communications, Community Relations, Governmental Relations and Media Relations.

As VP for external relations, Crosson will report directly to the President and work closely with the other vice presidents and deans and will be an important member of the President’s senior management team.

“I am very pleased that Elaine was able to accept this position,” said President Stanley. “With her years of experience in the public and private sectors, her gracious demeanor, and her deep roots on Long Island and in the State of New York, I am confident that she will bring our new external relations department together in a way that will advance the Stony Brook mission in a strategic and energetic way.”

As General Counsel at LIU, Crosson was responsible for managing all legal affairs of the University, defending the University in legal actions and supervising in-house legal personnel and outside counsel. She joined Long Island University in 1999 as University director of government relations and one year later, was promoted to deputy general counsel and served in that capacity until she was appointed as General Counsel in 2007.

During her 12 years at Long Island University, Crosson served as a tireless advocate for the institution. She played a critical role in the successful sale of the Southampton campus to Stony Brook University and represented the institution in a wide range of matters, representing LIU in trial courts and the appellate division and before various government agencies including the EPA, the Office of Attorney General, and the IRS. Drawing on her in-depth knowledge of government, Crosson helped the University secure millions of dollars in state and federal funding, and most recently was at the forefront of the University’s efforts to obtain support for capital projects through the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program.

Crosson holds a B.A. from St. John’s University and a J.D. from Albany Law School, Union University. She began her career as a legislative aide for the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate, after which she held two positions in the state’s court system including legislative counsel in the Office of Court Administration and principal law clerk to a Judge on the New York Court of Appeals. Crosson then went into private practice, handling civil cases as an associate at Whiteman, Osterman and Hanna, PC, and later became general counsel for the Interest of Lawyer Account (IOLA) Fund, an organization dedicated to funding legal assistance for low-income New Yorkers. She also spent four years as a Magistrate in Family Court before joining Long Island University.

“Challenging economic times provide opportunity for innovation and creativity,” said Crosson. “Stony Brook University, under the direction of President Stanley, is perfectly poised to lead the Long Island region to economic recovery and eventual prosperity, and I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the University’s senior management team at this critical time.”

Crosson lives in Huntington with her son Daniel. Her late husband, Matthew C. Crosson served for 16 years as president of the Long Island Association and prior to that held numerous positions in New York State government.  – See more at: http://commcgi.cc.sunysb.edu/cgi-bin/am2/admin.cgi#sthash.bIN46juL.dpuf
