Stony Brook University Offers New Doctoral Program In Science Education
STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 14, 2010 — The Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME) at Stony Brook University is pleased to announce that it will soon begin accepting applications for its new Ph.D. Program in Science Education. The program will provide graduate education for those who wish to teach science education in universities, advance science education in the schools, and influence science education policy.
The Director of the program, Professor Keith Sheppard, who is also the Associate Director of CESAME, states, “This is a wonderful offering for CESAME, our University, and the K-12 educational community. The majority of this year’s applicants will be from New York, but within a few years we will expand to take in students from across the nation as well as internationally.”
“With the increased national emphasis on science and mathematics education, CESAME is offering the right degree at the right time,” noted CESAME Director David Bynum. “This program will bring first hand knowledge of science, science education research and policy into critical nodes of decision making and will positively affect administrators, policy makers and educators of science teachers.”
The Director of the Professional Education Program at Stony Brook, Dorit Kaufman, adds, “Both New York State and CESAME are to be commended for their foresight in creating this program, which has been three years in the making. It can become a local, state and national model for bringing quality science education to our next generation.”
Stony Brook University is one of the State University of New York’s four University Centers and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
“The fact that our University created this program and obtained New York State approval to offer it is an example of Stony Brook’s vision leadership in science education,” said Stony Brook Provost and Senior Vice President Eric Kaler. “We look forward to continuing to provide New York State and our nation with the skills and knowledge to develop our scientific work force for the future.”
