President’s Letter

In less than 60 years, Stony Brook University has become a world-class public research institution, with our ambition and determination yielding extraordinary local, regional and global results.

Providing access to excellence is critical to this success. Across the board, we are committed to giving our students the tools they need to excel in an environment that celebrates their achievement and diversity. And we do so while earning a global ranking that places us among the top 1 percent of higher education institutions in the world; having a student body in which more than half of our students come from families with household incomes less than $75,000; being part of the management team of a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy; and delivering outstanding healthcare at the only tertiary care facility in the region. That’s a rare combination in American higher education.

This spring we are launching a strategic initiative that I believe captures the incredible drive and momentum of our University. FAR BEYOND expresses our bold spirit as a community and as individuals, and it will serve as a strong foundation from which we continue to lift awareness and understanding of the great things accomplished here every day. The process of developing this engaging strategy has been a deeply collaborative one, and we are very excited to share it with the world.

To support Stony Brook in all effŽorts to go FAR BEYOND, we have embarked on the most ambitious fundraising campaign in SUNY history, The Campaign for Stony Brook, which aims to raise $600 million by July 2018. The Campaign will fuel our collective imagination and drive our future, allowing us to continue providing a first-rate education at an aŽffordable cost. It will perpetuate our hopes and expand our aspirations, empower us to attract even more forward-thinking academic leaders across all disciplines, and stimulate more innovation in our classrooms. And The Campaign for Stony Brook will advance our leadership impact in New York and within higher education globally.

In this inaugural issue of our new Stony Brook University Magazine, we explore several of the exceptional people, programs and breakthroughs that embody FAR BEYOND. Across so many areas — conservation and sustainability, social mobility, translational and basic research and the arts, to name just a few — our reach is having an inspiring eŽffect on our community, our nation and the world right now.

It’s such an incredible time at Stony Brook, and we’re just getting started.
