Stony Brook Loves Long Island Parks

I love my park day

I-Love-My-Park-DayWhen there is a need, Stony Brook students are always quick to answer the call. So when a request came in for help cleaning up our local parks on Saturday, May 3, the University’s AmeriCorps Program volunteers and other students jumped into action despite their impending class finals.

Now in its third year, “I Love My Park Day” is a statewide project launched by Governor Andrew Cuomo aimed at improving and enhancing New York state parks and historic sites. Nearly 45 Stony Brook students volunteered at seven different Long Island state parks — Belmont Lake, Caleb Smith, Heckscher, Montauk Point, Nissequogue River, Robert Moses and Sunken Meadow — and one historic site, the Walt Whitman Birthplace. Volunteers removed trash, planted trees and gardens, restored trails and worked on various site improvement projects.
