It was smiles all around on June 11 when more than 50 pediatric patients and their guests walked the red carpet on a star-studded prom night at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Throughout the evening, young partygoers enjoyed great food, music and plenty of photo ops.
Every teen looks forward to prom night, but for kids who struggle with chronic or terminal illnesses, prom may not seem possible. Thanks to many volunteers and dedicated hospital staffers, the first Stony Brook Children’s Prom gave pediatric patients the opportunity to feel like every other teen — to party with their peers, dance the night away and experience this important milestone. And, for one night, to forget about all of their medical challenges.
The memorable night kicked off with optional professional hair styling, makeup and nail services. Special-occasion wear was donated for anyone who needed it. Attendees then walked down a red carpet to a beautifully decorated tent decorated with sparkly lights, colorful star-shaped balloons and confetti, and goodies specially prepared for the occasion.
The event was such a great success that plans are already in the works for next year.
