FulbrightThis year, a record number of 14 Stony Brook University students have been recognized by the Department of State’s prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program, a highly competitive scholarship opportunity that provides funding for American students to conduct research or teach English in more than 140 countries overseas.

The Fulbright Program, which was created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946, provides grants annually for international research and teaching to foster global partnership and cultural exchange.

This year’s 14 Fulbright honorees, profiled below, are Adena Assawakulpaibool, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Cindy Du, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Mikaela Dunkin, Fulbright Research Award; Max Frankel, Fulbright Research Award; Madison Geiger, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Jennifer Gersten, Fulbright Research Award; Sarah Ghandour, Fulbright Research Award; Kiara Kolaczyk, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Alice Lee, Fulbright Research Award; Mariam Malik, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Erica Miller, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Niki Nassiri, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Isabelle Pazar, Fulbright Research Award; and Megan Small, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award.

The four alternates are Caleb Faul, Fulbright Research Award; Anne Green, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; Sarah Kelly, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award; and Nicholas Siegel, Fulbright Future Scholarship.

“We are delighted with the success of the Fulbright advising program and so very proud of every student who aimed for this prestigious award,” said Celia Marshik, interim dean of the Graduate School, and professor of English. “The recipients will have the opportunity of a lifetime, and every applicant learned a tremendous amount about proposal writing that will serve them well in the future. Bon voyage to the awardees!”

“Our Fulbright advising program has steadily grown over time, but this year our students have gone above and beyond with their record-breaking achievement,” said Kathleen Flint Ehm, assistant dean of graduate and postdoctoral initiatives at the Graduate School. “We’re so proud of them and their hard work. We look forward to seeing where else these awards can take them.”

“The Graduate School, Fellowships Office, and many faculty, staff, and of course students at Stony Brook have worked hard over the past several years to develop and expand our participation in Fulbright and other fellowship programs,” said Eric Beverley, associate professor of history and long-time Fulbright committee member. “These efforts — and above all, the dedicated support from the Graduate School — have helped make Stony Brook undergraduate and graduate students much more competitive in national fellowship competitions. Success in Fulbright over recent years nicely illustrates these impressive achievements.”
