Peace Corps Seeks Volunteers in its 60th Anniversary Year

For many years Stony Brook University has supported Peace Corps projects around the globe, with 239 alumni that have volunteered with the agency and its mission to promote world peace and friendship. As of 2020, Stony Brook is also one of the Corps’ newest Peace Corps Prep host schools.

As the Peace Corps celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2021, it also marks a new beginning. When the agency evacuated its global posts in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it paused operations and brought more than 6,000 Americans home from service in more than 60 countries. The agency is now recruiting and planning for its return to service, bringing an extraordinary opportunity for future volunteers to start a brand new chapter for the Peace Corps.

“Peace Corps has recruited on campus for more than 20 years,” said Marianna Savoca, Assistant Vice President for Career Development and Experiential Education. “We are a great match in that we share similar values: both organizations are fervently committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and social mobility on a global scale. We are excited about being the only university in New York to receive an invitation to host the Peace Corps Prep program this year, and we look forward to leveraging that program to better prepare more Seawolves for future service in the Peace Corps.”
